VR review

This week, designers Per Stribeck and Karl Lövholm of Tikab, carried out a very successful review of the mechanical structures of the new Slussen in Stockholm and the new Hisingebron "Arpeggio" to be built in Gothenburg. Tikab is designing the sluice gates and is involved in the design of the discharge mechanism in Slussen. In Arpeggio, we are designing the entire lifting machinery in detail.

We have been working on Slussen since 2012 and Arpeggio for about 1 year. Every single component is 3D-modelled in Solidworks and we have full control over the smallest nipple. But with VR technology, systems can be examined in a whole new way. You can see and understand how everything is connected and that the system really works. In addition, communication with others is unbeatable. They just point and explain. If you need to bend down and look inside a closed structure, it's easy. The speed and clarity beats both the drawing board and the coordination model.

Per Stribeck's comment: "Very good complement for layout control and mechanics development. Adds completely new qualities to the review work. This technology would have been invaluable in the review of the mechanics of the openable roofs in e.g. Friends arena and Tele2 arena.

BIM/VDC thinking

Tikab also has VDC responsibility in the Slussen project and is working to exploit the advantages available today with modern technology. VDC Manager Johan Stribeck comments:

If this technique is transferred to all those involved in the process, there is much to be gained at all levels. For example, external auditors during their review, shop floor workers before manufacturing and contractors before assembly. And of course, operational staff at the management stage. Once tried, there is no argument for not working with this technology to complement other documents.

Tikab develops and implements working methodologies that support the rationale of BIM and VDC - Digitisation in Construction with the goal of "The Unbroken Flow of Information". I.e. the technical consultants should create their technical solutions and quality assure them at a high level. From there, documents of various types and purposes are delivered, which can be refined and used by the receiving party in an efficient way without loss of information and with maximum possibility to refine and complete the information without starting again with "blank paper". However, a good BIM strategy in the project makes VR coordination an easy thing to implement. Even in the middle of an ongoing project.

Using VR for review and coordination where it is needed and most useful in a project is not a big step if you have ensured that the objects from the design are structured and named in a good way. We see this as an obvious complement to traditional 3D coordination and are now investing heavily in this on several projects. We offer total solutions that include everything from project requirements to installation, support and hardware leasing.

Combining drone technology with VR

It gets really exciting when more techniques are combined. Tikab has been investing in the digitisation of existing buildings with drones for 3 years. Now that we can combine the results of the drone scan with BIM models from the design and experience them together immersively with VR headsets, you can really see the benefits. We will be demonstrating these techniques at a digitisation seminar at the end of October. Follow us on Linkedin to get the invitation if it sounds interesting.
